In 1910, Professor A. G. Högbom initially discovered the meteorite near the Muonio River and named it after the nearby place Muonionalusta. Four decades later, Professor Nils Göran David Malmqvist studied the meteorite in 1948. This meteorite, known as Muonionalusta, is thought to be the oldest at 4.5653 ± 0.0001 billion years old and contains stishovite, a rare mineral.
